My guess is that this very high grade Patek Philippe was made for Tiffany and during the great gold rush of the 1980s, when gold reached around $900 an ounce and watch collecting was considered eccentric or for the very rich, the 18k case would have been sold for scrap. Another reason could be that when Tiffany sold the watch manufacturing site in Switzerland to Patek employees could purchase movements and have them cased at a lower price.! (Ref rm217)
